Abbie Madden

MS, RD, LD

Pronouns: they/them

Not currently accepting new clients

I’m Abbie, registered dietitian (RD) and founder of Space City Nutrition. My passion is creating a safe place for people to heal their relationships with food and body on their own terms.

I received my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nutritional sciences from Oklahoma State University. I completed my dietetic internship at University of Houston, after which I worked at a local eating disorder treatment center and received extensive training in treatment of anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, and ARFID. In addition to eating disorders, I also specialize in nutrition therapy for polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).

I identify as non-binary and particularly love working with members of the LGBTQ+ community. I am passionate about accessibility to treatment, which is why we accept as many insurance carriers as possible and offer reduced rates/services based on need.

I truly love managing and supervising the team at Space City Nutrition. I’m committed to fostering a supportive and welcoming environment for both clients and team members, ensuring everyone feels heard, respected, and cared for.

In my free time, I enjoy playing with my dog Ozzie, thrift shopping, and growing a variety of houseplants. I am committed to a lifetime of learning and unlearning, personally and professionally.

Allison is the kind of dietitian who tells it like it is—with warmth, humor, and deep respect for your lived experience. Whether she’s unpacking the legacy of 90s diet culture (SnackWells, SlimFast, low-rise jeans) or helping you reconnect with what truly nourishes you, Allison brings clarity, compassion, and a down-to-earth vibe to her work.

She earned her Bachelor’s in Dietetics from Texas A&M and completed her dietetic internship at the University of Houston. Before joining Space City Nutrition, she worked at a local eating disorder treatment center, gaining extensive experience with binge eating disorder, bulimia, OSFED, and anorexia.

Allison especially loves supporting clients healing from chronic dieting and disordered eating, and exploring how diet culture has shaped their relationship with food and body.

She is neurodivergent and a strong LGBTQ+ ally who values honesty, autonomy, and creating a space where people feel safe, affirmed, and genuinely cared for.

When she’s not working, you can find her reading, playing cozy computer games, dancing at a show, or planning her next concert.

Why Space city nutrition?

One question we get asked a lot is, “Where did the name come from?”

To begin, Houston is fondly known as “Space City” to many because of our NASA space station. But beyond that, space represents curiosity, exploration, and new frontiers, which are themes we incorporate deeply in our work with clients and in our own personal work.

We practice from a weight-neutral philosophy, meaning we do not focus on weight loss as a primary outcome. Often, targeted weight loss is unsuccessful in the long run and creates a host of other problems.

Instead, we focus on improving other things we can be sure will have a positive effect on your health, such as improving your relationship with food, getting back in touch with body cues of hunger and fullness, and exploring your relationship with exercise.

This stance is officially called Health At Every Size, and you can read more about it here.

We also practice from an LGBTQ+ affirming, anti-racist, neurodiversity-affirming lens. We value the autonomy and consent of each client and are committed to unlearning our own biases as we stand in solidarity with marginalized groups.

FAQs

  • Most clients meet weekly or bi-weekly with us for 3-4 months and after this may taper down to less frequent sessions and eventually stop seeing us. However, it’s also normal to have sessions for a much longer time. We will make a plan based on your individual needs.

  • We take insurance! However, if we don’t accept your insurance or your insurance does not cover sessions, the price is $150 for a 50-minute session and $90 for a 25-minute follow-up. All first sessions are required to be 50 minutes.

We also offer reduced rates based on financial need. Fill out the contact form here to inquire.

  • We operate from a weight-neutral perspective and do not target weight loss as a goal of nutrition sessions. However, we understand many clients have concerns about their weight, and this is a topic we will absolutely explore in sessions. Go here for more about this approach.

We often see clients who have health conditions such as PCOS, prediabetes, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, celiac disease, GERD, etc. We will incorporate research-based nutrition approaches for managing your health condition while working to improving your relationship with food and your body.

  • Sessions that are missed or cancelled fewer than 24 hours prior to session time will incur a fee of $60/50-minute appointment and $30/25-minute appointment. Insurance does not pay for late cancellations or missed sessions. All clients are required to keep a credit card on file in case of no show/late cancellation charges. We understand emergencies happen, and will evaluate these on a case-by-case basis.
